The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on August 07, 2026, notified the Merchant Shipping (Safety of Navigation) Rules, 2026, in supersession of the Merchant Shipping (Safety of Navigation) Rules, 1997.
The following has been stated: -
•The Rules prescribe safety standards for navigation and operation of Indian ships and vessels.
•They establish requirements for navigational equipment, aids, charts and safety-related systems.
•Ship owners and operators are required to ensure proper maintenance, inspection and functioning of prescribed equipment.
•The Rules provide requirements relating to safe navigation, voyage planning, communication and emergency preparedness.
•They aim to strengthen maritime safety, prevent accidents and ensure compliance with applicable international safety standards.
•They shall come into force on August 13, 2026.
